hey fellas, shedder somehow got a hold of a solo that i had attempted like 10 years ago. i had some extra time at a recording studio called 'two guys in the valley'. i was done tracking some demos and the tape was rolling and well the rest is history. i'm a sensitive soul so could we have some constructive criticism? thanks fellas.
enjoy!

How cool to hear you playing so well! I was smiling the whole time.
Were those the Recording Customs? They sounded really nice.
Just a few thoughts:
The accelerando was cool (if that was your intention) towards the end of the samba pattern (which was very nice). Sometimes your singles sounded a little compressed where the time period between notes was shorter than it should have been. The buzz rolls were also a bit compressed where the length of each buzz was very short. This forced you to meter them at a faster rate than if you had played longer buzzes. This may also be related to the tuning of your snare.
I dug the cool variety of ideas and some smooth transitions.
Thanks for posting that Chuch!

Good stuff! Just downloaded the mp3 file. I love the different sounds you create with what seems to be a huge selection of great cymbals. I would love to play on one of those studio sets with great mics. The small amount of echo created on the rim-clicks sounds awesome too.

Very nice! If that was 10 years ago you must be absolutely SMOKIN' right about now...let's hear something recent when you get a chance!
I'm more of a "feel" guy when it comes to the 'Latin' stuff, but hey- it's a drum solo! You know...try not to sound like a rock drummer playing a samba, for example.
On the Reggae thing I would probably play a traditional "one-drop" (1/2 time feel with kick on beat 3) going into the "SKA" type beat with 4 on the floor...
just little things like that.
I feel silly even saying anything, though...sounded pretty darned good for a spur of the moment(no pun intended) improvised drum solo!

Dood!!! Some cool drumming!! Like the Sango/time soloing. The "jeff" shuffle was the cool thing to do back then huh??
Man!! It's soooo funny!!! That recording custom sound is like no other eh??
I just put an old demo I made from tape to CD this weekend. That good ol recording custom sound comes straight thru like no other drum. Maybe everyone should post a taste of their playing to go along with their screenames and pictures to get a little better aquainted with others on HOD??
A new thread maybe??
Cool playing man!!

thanks, derek and wecklsmech.
weckmech, i know what you mean. the main reason why i uploaded the solo was so that you guys can get an idea of where i come from musically and to hopefully legitimize myself. (i know that i tend to really read what guys like steve holmes has to say cuz i see / hear their work.) yes, it might not be a bad idea to start a thread like that just so that we get to know eachother better.
as for the drums, i wholeheartedly agree. i don't know what it is about those old recording customs (i've since sold them - arrrrgggh!), but they sure did shine. i remember talking to ross garfield and he told me that certain producers were asking specifically for those pre-yess recording customs for some of their sessions. interesting, huh? the snare though was an old pearl free-floating brass 6.5x14. it had those old hex rod lugs. that thing had stainless steel rims. had a lot of body and crack to em. i sold those too! thanks again for the kind feedbacks.
